The most noticeable difference with the most recent knives are the handles, and not simply cosmetically. "We had brilliant features in our previous range of knives, however the handles were too thick and bulky just to accommodate them", says Product Manager, Jason Carpenter. "Our intention was to lighten up and downsize these new knives while retaining the present functionality. We also aimed to make sure that they could be far easily identified as being grouped together."

The new handles on the Crater series are solid black, 60% glass-filled nylon. Expanse knives boast a combination black and silver handle made from 60% glass-filled nylon and beefed up with stainless steel. By enhancing the handle scale/frame design, engineers were able to make them about 30% more light weight and thinner than their original counterparts.

Blades:

Each series features 2.6-inch blades, (33-models). Crater series blades are put together using 420HC stainless steel and Expanse series using 154CM. Each knife is supplied with a combination straight/serrated blade. This combination blade is indicated by an "x" in the model title.

The Leatherman Expanse has been created for the most hardcore and demanding users.

Crater and Expanse series 33-models each have locking liner knives with improved Blade Launcher technology for smart deployment. Across both the Crater and Expanse models, users will notice features like bit drivers, fixed screwdrivers, bit storage in the handle together with carabiners that can be folded away into the handle. All the knives feature a detachable pocket clip.
